Review Doomed Souls evening

There are few moments in which you take part into a concert that makes you feel that your place is there, that nothing that happens around you matters anymore, and that your full attention is directed to the scene.

Exactly from this cause will I skip the introduction part, the details.. etc.. The location is well known to us from other events ( for example: Labyrinthic Metal Evening, Alcest, etc. ), the organizers as well: DonisArt. When we talk about DonisArt and Kogaionon we know for sure that we talk about seriosity and professionalism ( even if sometimes things don’t come out as one wishes ). The organizations was very okay, like other concerts they held, this time, the schedule was respected, the sound was very good, etc, etc.. These are things that I’ll elaborate further on.

I myself have been waiting for years for a concert in with an emphasis on ” doom metal ”, need I say that I was just as impatient as the moment in which I had found out that ”Mourning Beloveth” would visit us in 2008, ”Saturnus”, on those other two occasions, ”My Dying Bride” at Artmania, etc. Bluntly, I can say that this concert (out of a few), through its line-up, offered me the pleasure of savouring the show of every single band from beginning to end.

The concert started around the mentioned hour, I don’t think that any sort of delay occured even if the band members from Forgotten Tomb had a small incident with their tools in the airport. The guys from Forgotten Tomb are hard to be labeled ( according to their personal thoughts ), you can mention just as easily that, apart from the black with depressive influences, a blackened doom can be heard, anyway, the genre doesn’t really matter, but the state that they manage to give you, and these Italians managed to offer me goosebumps starting with the first notes. An unique experience for me, hearing ”Disheartment” live, followed immediately by ”Alone” and surely, not only for me. The tracks from the beginning took me by surprise, honestly, I was expecting to hear them towards the end, and when I actually started paying attention thoroughly, they had almost finished performing. The only displeasure was that they performed for not so long and maybe, the fact that they were the first band to perform that evening.

Aside from the two tracks I mentioned above, I’ve also heard: Steal my corpse, Solitude ways, Scars, A dish best served cold, Specters over Venice… there would’ve been room for House of Nostalgia, Springtime Depression, The Subway apathy, but maybe, on another occasion.

October Tide, the band that released a new album this year, after a period of inactivity, managed to astonish me through their positive effect over the audience. I was unnoticeable that they weren’t on the scene for a while; the guys did their job properly and thoroughly. Most of the songs were from the new album, ”A Thin Shell” and they attracted the audience as much as they attracted the related magazines, the album being quite appreciated by the reviewers. To be honest, around the end, they gave me a droplet of happiness, they played songs from their first albums as well, such as ”12 Days of Rain, Grey Dawn, All Painted Cold”.

The last band to step on the scenes that evening, the headliners, had some attempts to arrive in Romania before. Sadly, because of some organization problems, the concerts were cancelled. The third time brings luck, as Romanians tend to say it.. And yeah, it really did bring luck.

Saturnus sound amazingly good on CD and also live. I, myself, can’t understand how this band doesn’t have a stable structure and why the release of the new album is taking so much. (an album from which we had the pleasure of listening to 4 tracks.. and it’ll be such an album!)

As a small bracket, I heard/read in some other places that you don’t really have what to expect at a doom concert, that you need enough patience in order to last to the very end without getting cheesed off, or that you can find some other things to do, for example. And surely, the people who did that during the Saturnus concert lost something special; 2 hours filled with melancholic doom metal, profound, 2 hours of interior states of mind that only the ones with a passion in this field can describe.. but it’s not as lively as a concert of thrash/death or black.. But anyway, you can definitely live the moment to the fullest.. End of bracket.

The Danes had a fantastic welcome from the audience, and this fact was well remarked on the scene as well, sometimes they were overtaken, even, but in a good way, and this thing could be noticed in their performance, in the fact that they really enjoyed playing.. and they performed: Christ Goodbye, To the dreams, I long, All alone, Lost my way, etc + some tracks from the new album.. ( and you have a small sample below, the song named ”Wind Torn”- from what I found out).

And, to end with these small thoughts from my part, I’d like to thank DonisArt for a concert that honestly deserves good feedback, and not only from the people that listen to Doom, I’d hope.
